Description

The H.M.S. Beagle (named after the breed of dog) was launched in May of 1820 as a ten gun sloop of the British Royal Navy. She remained unused for five years until 1825 when she was refitted as a survey ship tasked with carrying out hydrographic missions in South America. It was on her second voyage, however, that she was transformed into one of the most famous ships in history. On board was a young geologist by the name of Charles Darwin. Over the course of the five year journey, Darwin conducted extensive studies and observations of the wildlife and geology of the various destinations. From his research, he went on to publish his controversial, but groundbreaking theories. This interesting historical work was published in 1880 with the hopes of inspiring children in the history of life and geography. It describes the various places and creatures seen by Darwin on his important and memorable journey aboard the H.M.S. Beagle.
